In Conversation…Gaylene Preston and Deborah Shepard
Renowned filmmaker and producer Gaylene Preston comes from Wellington for a conversation with author Deborah Shepard.
Gaylene’s work ranges across fiction and non-fiction, television and film - often drawing on the stories of working class women and men. She is renowned for her documentaries, a highlight being the popular cinema documentary War Stories: Our Mothers Never Told Us. Her latest work, currently screening on TV3, is Hope and Wire, a drama series about psychological and social disruption in the aftermath of the 2010-2011 Christchurch earthquakes.
Deborah Shepard is a film historian, biographer and life writing mentor, who recently ran a series of master classes in writing memoir at the Michael King Writers’ Centre. She held a residency at the centre in 2013, working on a book about the art and craft of memoir. Her books include Reframing Women: A History of New Zealand Film, Between the Lives: Partners in Art and Her Life's Work.
