Sharing WWI memories and memorabilia with New Zealanders
In July, the world marks the centenary of the beginning of World War I. New Zealand’s museums hold many memories of
wartime through the objects in their collections. Now they can join together to create a collaborative, virtual
exhibition that informs and enlightens current generations about the sacrifices of their ancestors.
All That Remains: WWI objects in New Zealand museum collections | He Waihotanga Iho mai i te Pakanga Tuatahi is a shared exhibition website that features objects from the home front and overseas. The website offers a platform
for museums, galleries, historical societies, archives, iwi (tribal groups), and Returned and Services’ Associations to
participate in the commemorations and showcase their war-related collections, stories, and activities to the world. It
is produced by Te Papa’s National Services Te Paerangi.
Victoria Esson, Manager of National Services Te Paerangi, says, ‘We’re very excited to be launching this digital
initiative for the museums of New Zealand. We look forward to the site growing over time as more museums and collections
join All That Remains.’
Owaka Museum is one of the first organisations to showcase its World War I collection on All That Remains. Director Kaaren Mitcalfe is enthusiastic about the initiative: ‘This opens the door for online visitors to see World
War I material from around New Zealand. It is a great way for us to share effectively and efficiently in the
commemoration and feel a part of this national event by linking in with other museums using the site.’
