Hundreds of kiwis ready to brave a shave

This week hundreds of kiwis across the country are set to lose their locks as they brave a shave for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand’s Shave for a Cure fundraiser. Their efforts will help the 6 New Zealanders diagnosed with a blood cancer or related condition every day.

22-year old Sam Ricketts from Auckland knows first-hand the impact a blood cancer diagnosis can have on a family. His 18-year-old brother Ben was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma seven years ago.

Sam is one five kiwis appearing in the Shave for a Cure advertising campaign which focuses on the stories of why they chose to shave – to help their family members, to make a difference, or simply beat the boys at the office.

“An experience like this forces you to grow up very quickly,” says Sam. “I was very impressed with how he handled himself.”
Ben has been through chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant. He still has some health concerns but is now in remission.

“Something like this just forces those blood connections out and now we are closer than we would have ever been without it.”

More than 1600 kiwis nationwide have signed up to Shave for a Cure, with that number expected to grow both during and after Shave Week. To date almost $530,000 has been raised.

The funds raised through Shave for a Cure enable Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, who receive no Government funding, to provide their services free of charge to patients and families living with a blood cancer or related conditions across the country.
