Scarification Artist Headlines the International Tattoo and Art Expo 2014
Branding, etching, cutting - is “scarification” the next big thing in the world of body art?
Scarification experts, blood painters, graffiti artists, aerial silk contortionists and car and skateboarding enthusiasts will join some of the world’s best tattoo artists at the International Tattoo and Arts Expo, in Hamilton this weekend.
Now in its fourth year the expo continues to outdo itself, this year featuring an even more impressive line-up of artists, aerial acrobats, and performers at Claudelands Event Centre.
Top of the must-see list for many will be Brendan Russell, an artist specialising in scarification – a means of permanent body modification through scratching, etching, burning, branding, or superficially cutting designs, pictures or words into the skin. We also see the return of Dr Rev, a huge hit from the 2012 expo, and infamous for creating incredibly intricate artworks painted in his own blood.
As well as tattoo artists from all around the world, including the very best New Zealand tattoo talent, also present will be world champion Kiwi body painter Yolanda from Body FX, cosmetic tattoo artist - Lusi of White Rabbit Ink, aerial silk contortionist (and Miss Tattoo NZ) – Cassie Law and burlesque performer – Ruby Ruin.
Other attractions not to be missed this year include, a classic car show, skate competition and performances by NZ comedian – Jared Fell.
Event organiser Chris Preece says the weekend-long International Tattoo and Arts Expo is an opportunity not to be missed.
“It’s not often you can get up close and personal with the best local and international talent under one roof. A lot of the tattoo artists exhibiting are booked out for months in advance, so it’s an opportunity to get inked by some of the world’s best,” Chris says.
But even if you’re not keen on permanent ink, he adds that the expo is an amazing place to get a glimpse of all that is happening in street culture.
“It’s not just about the incredible tattoo art. We also have amazing street artists, a car show, competitions, comedy shows and burlesque performances, not to mention great live music all weekend.”

Funds raised & collection boxes at the expo will go to ‘True Colours’.
