Maker Makesplosion!
The maker movement is here! If you’ve ever liked the idea of designing your own computer game or building a robot then
this is for you. Come along to Makesplosion! at Auckland’s Central Library and have a go!
Central City Library is holding Makesplosion! - a makerspace launch, on 2 and 3 November at 11am on the ground floor. It
will be an opportunity to experiment, invent, build electronics and print in 3D. Participants can get involved in simple
making activities and sign up for future workshops.
Expert makers from The Mind Lab, MindKits, Vivenda, App la carte, and the Media Design School will be there to assist
and lead demonstrations.
By holding Makesplosion! and piloting the makerspace concept, Auckland Libraries are taking up the challenge of meeting
the changing information technology needs of its customers says Central City Library Service Delivery Manager, Kate
Roberts.
“Maker spaces support creativity and learning with technology, and keep libraries up to speed with the technology that
will support creativity and learning in the future,” says Roberts.
Library makerspaces are new to Auckland Libraries and Makesplosion! will explore the concept for Auckland, but it
follows a strong trend internationally.
“We have watched the development of the hugely popular maker spaces in the Chicago Public Library and the Fayetteville
Free Library FabLab. Maker spaces in libraries are attracting strong interest and engagement from their communities,
particularly in the United States,” says Roberts.
The making is planned to continue with workshops and free use hours in November.
