Matariki Festival finale at Silo Park this weekend
There’s only a few days to go until a series of fantastic Matariki celebrations take place at Silo Park, as a
culmination of the month-long festival. From Friday 19 – Sunday 21 July, Silo Park will come alive with a special
exhibition from ‘Paper Pirates’ featuring public submissions, a Matariki installation that will showcase New Zealanders’
stories, as well as light displays, a very special Silo Cinema, and the return of Silo Markets.
Paper Pirates
This Friday night, Silo 7 will play host to the third instalment of The Shutter Pirates’ ‘Paper Pirates’ exhibition, as
part of the Matariki Festival. ‘Paper Pirates’ is a unique style of exhibition where the images displayed are submitted
by the public. In celebration of Matariki, photographers have been asked to consider a theme of ‘Manaakitanga – Sharing
our world with others’. All submissions will be exhibited on July 19th, but with a twist; at the end of the exhibition,
guests are invited to pull their favourite image off the wall as a keepsake. Submissions are still being taken; for more

Te Pou Kōrero Installation
Over the past few weeks, Te Pou Kōrero (speaking post) has travelled to a wide array of Auckland communities gathering
stories that align with one of the guiding principles of Matariki Festival 2013, ‘Manaakitanga: sharing your world with others’. The
stories recorded through the Te Pou Kōrero will create an interactive aural installation inside Silo 6 this weekend.
Silo Cinema presents ‘Billy T: Te Movie’
In further celebration of Matariki, Silo Cinema will remember NZ’s favourite comedian, Billy T James with a screening of
‘Billy T: Te Movie’ this Saturday at 7pm. This family-friendly documentary chronicles a Kiwi legend, and includes
interviews and remastered footage. The film will be accompanied by a night market, food stalls and the Silo Park bar –
providing a fantastic night out for Aucklanders, and those who want to introduce their kids to the great on-screen
characters he was known for. View the trailer here.
Silo Markets return for Matariki
This Saturday and Sunday also feature day and night markets, with some of Aucklanders’ favourite Silo Market vendors making an appearance, including Stumpy's, Langos,
The Lucky Taco (Sunday only) and more. Furthermore, visitors can check out a series of light installations, projections
and sculptures that will be dotted around Silo Park.
About Matariki
On June 22nd, the Matariki star cluster rises into our skies signalling the beginning of a month of celebration and
entertainment, which brings a modern take to ancient Māori tradition. It heralds in the Māori New Year, which is a time
to connect with, and give thanks to the land, sea and sky. It is also a time to reflect on the year gone by, and
celebrate the year ahead.
