A Date with White Night at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum – 16 March
Aucklands Arts Festival’s spectacular White Night is back. For one spellbinding night Auckland’s art galleries and
museums will open their doors and seduce you with a rich spread of arts activities till well after dark.
You will be enchanted by the vast range of artists, musicians, dancers and performers of all descriptions who will
dramatically transform our cultural venues.
Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum is again offering a myriad of contrasting activities for all the family from 4.00pm
until 11.00pm. These activities are unique to Voyager as they all relate to the wonders of the sea. Whether it be Glow
in the Dark where you take your camera along and spy with your camera’s little eye our underwater wonderland or you can
hop on board New Zealand’s oldest and smallest steam tug SS Puke – she’s so cute, the kids love her – and putter around
the inner harbour. For a bigger boat experience Voyager’s scow Ted Ashby will be taking special trips identifying the
iconic landmarks of Auckland’s beautiful harbour. A Fish and Chip dinner is on offer to boot. The museum’s trusty
choristers - The Maritime Crew – will be entertaining you with old and new, rollicking and sad, shanties of the sea. And
for the ‘littlies’ they can roll up in their PJs for bedtime tales under the sea in our Glow in the Dark wonderland.
Voyager’s latest major exhibition in the Edmiston Gallery is Kupe Sites/Landmarks of the great voyager. This is a
touring exhibition from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and explores the stories of Kupe’s encounter with
New Zealand through names of various landmarks and places and even the name Aotearoa. On White Night, photographer Mark
Adams will host a discussion around the photography of landmarks and landscapes held in the Kupe Sites ‘landmarks of a
great voyager’ exhibition. He will also launch Voyager’s photo competition to be called ‘Landmarks of People and the
Sea’. This is an online competition where people are asked to submit their photos of their maritime landmarks to the
museum and they will be displayed online and in the Galleries. The esteemed judges will award prizes in all categories.

Also in the photography genre Voyager is offering an Auckland Harbour ‘On Water’ Photography Workshop with maritime
photographer Will Calver. This will comprise an explanation of the creative and technical aspects of ‘on water’
photography, including a 60 minute sailing on Ted Ashby followed by an on shore workshop discussing insights into
movement and low light photography. DSLR Cameras are recommended and Bookings Essential.
Art in the Dark goes out and about in Auckland to light up selected White Night venues with creative projects from New
Zealand’s most innovative light artists. Voyager welcomes Something Fishy by acclaimed light artists Hannah Jenson and Devon Headland. And Something Fishy will welcome all visitors to Voyager on White Night as this installation will be in front of the entrance to the
museum.
The night would not be complete without the opportunity to take a sail in the dark on Voyager’s very elegant Tall Ship,
Breeze. A magical experience as you look back and view the glimmering lights of the City of Sails. For further
