Whisky and a Movie – The Perfect End to an Antarctic Exhibition
Dunedin (Friday 16 November 2012) - The Dunedin City Library is showcasing the closing week of their current Reed Gallery
Exhibition, Next Stop Antarctica: Dunedin’s Role in Polar Exploration with two events for the public to enjoy.
The first is a talk by Neville Peat about his latest book, Shackleton’s Whisky, on Wednesday 28 November from 6.00pm, which traces the origins of a fine single-malt whisky, discovered on ice beneath
Shackleton’s expedition hut 100 years after his fated trip to the Antarctic.
The second is a film screening of new release, Hunting the Ice Whales, by Natural History NZ, on Saturday 1 December at 12.30pm. The film follows attempts to study the Antarctic whale
population using non-lethal techniques. The scientists brave Mother Nature at her worst, on a voyage that could put an
end to legalised whaling.
Both events will be held on the fourth floor of Dunedin City Library, and will inspire audience members to visit the
Reed Gallery Exhibition on the third floor, before it closes.
The Reed Gallery exhibition, Next Stop Antarctica: Dunedin’s Role in Polar Exploration, looks at the vital role that Dunedin and Port Chalmers played for iconic explorers such as Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest
Shackleton, and Richard E. Byrd, as a launching point and a place for family and friends to gather and await their
return.
Material on display includes first edition books, original letters, photographs, and artefacts, including a typewriter
that accompanied Scott on his expedition, courtesy of the Port Chalmers Maritime Museum.
