MTG Hawke’s Bay – A New Name for a New Location
When the new museum and art gallery building on Tennyson Street opens next year it will have a new name - MTG Hawke’s
Bay.
HBMAG Director Douglas Lloyd Jenkins says the name change reflects a desire to create a brand that takes the building
and what it represents into the future.
In developing the concept MTG Hawke’s Bay, Beehive Creative (the Company contracted to review the current HBMAG brand),
are aiming to bring together three key parts of the institution, the museum, theatre and gallery. A reference to the
theatre had been missing within the HBMAG name.
“The new brand has a unique voice that reflects the modernity of the new spaces while paying homage to the heritage of
the existing structures. MTG Hawke’s Bay is an honest and simple brand that will underpin an exciting next stage for the
arts in Hawke’s Bay,” says Mr Clow, Beehive Director.
Names like the Century will be retained in the new brand architecture but are still open to the possibility of
sponsorship.
The Museum, which has operated under a range of names since its inception in 1859, began as the Hawke’s Bay Mechanics
Institute. The museum has also been known as Hawke’s Bay Philosophical Institute 1874 -1935, Hawke’s Bay Art Gallery & Museum 1936-1988, Hawke’s Bay Museum 1988-2006, and the Hawke’s Bay Museum & Art Gallery 2006-2012.
MTG Hawke’s Bay will be home to the great treasures of Hawke’s Bay and is set to open in September 2013.
