The dirt behind a soap is exposed in Stagecraft’s production of Serial Killers opening 19 September at the Gryphon Theatre.
Written by James Griffin, of Outrageous Fortune, The Almighty Johnsons, Sione’s Wedding, Mercy Peak (and indeed most
other hit New Zealand TV or movies you’ve ever heard of) fame, Serial Killers follows the lives of the script writers of fictional medical soap ‘Heart of Hearts’. The play won awards and rave
reviews and later debuted as a television series in 2005.
Director Iona Anderson describes Serial Killers as a “sharply observed irreverent comedy”.
“The play is loosely based on Griffin's time working on the New Zealand soap Shortland Street. And he’s drawn on what’s
obviously a very real conflict – it’s the scriptwriters who come up with a great storyline, but they don't get the
credit. Instead it's the actor who looks good and gets the adulation from the viewing public,” says Iona.
As the writers in Serial Killers scheme to kill off the annoying male lead, the tables are turned when the actor decides he doesn’t want to be written
off and decides to take control.
“While on one level it’s just plain funny, the situation also raises questions about the impact of TV entertainment
when TV becomes more real than life itself.”
Serial Killers, is on at the Gryphon Theatre, 22 Ghuznee Street and runs from 19 – 29 September. Tickets $22 or $20. Group bookings
