NZ’s Future Singing Stars Have Only Days Left to Enrol for Well Respected NZ Singing School
The 25th New Zealand Singing School Te Wānanga Toi Waiata, is set to be the best yet, with many new initiatives to
enhance the offering of this well established and respected intensive singing school for serious amateur singers, or
singing students on the path to a singing career.
Local (and national) singers had until Sunday 15th August to get their enrolments in and register for the January 2011
School held at EIT, Taradale, Hawke’s Bay. However, the School is accepting late enrolments up until the end of August
by arrangement (email info@signingschool.org.nz) as places are strictly limited. Enrolments can be done online at the school’s new website www.singingschool.org.nz.
Places at the School are limited to 80 students, who come mostly from New Zealand and some from Australia. Applicants
need to be over 16 years of age and receiving formal singing training. Once accepted, students are organised into
streams reflecting their experience, knowledge and skills. The School’s Artistic Director is once again, highly
respected William Evans Senior Lecturer in Voice at the University of Otago, Judy Bellingham. She will be assisted by
Deputy Artistic Director, Robert Wiremu.
The NZ Singing School is the only residential summer singing school in the southern hemisphere that caters for students
across the full spectrum of vocal performance. It provides an intensive ten-day learning and performance experience,
with an impressive national and international faculty providing tuition in opera, oratorio, leider, musical theatre,
popular, jazz, contemporary song and stage craft.
All students have the opportunity to perform to the public during the course of the School. These concerts include a
mixture of informal “on campus” concerts featuring students’ own choice of items, plus four formal concerts in venues
off campus. Rehearsed items, reflecting the best performances of oratorio, classical song and musical theatre, will be
presented at St John’s Cathedral, Century Theatre and Tabard Theatre in Napier. The final concert, featuring soloists,
ensembles and full chorus items from the opera and musical theatre repertoire, will be held at the Hawke’s Bay Opera
House in Hastings on 15 January 2011.
