Mahler’s Eighth Symphony to kick-off the New Zealand International Arts Festival
In a new venture for Radio New Zealand the opening concert of this year's New Zealand International Arts Festival will
be available as a live videocast on our website.
The performance of Gustav Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, on 26 February, conducted by iconic international musician, Vladimir Ashkenazy, is to be held at Wellington’s Michael
Fowler Centre.
There’ll be a traditional live broadcast on Radio New Zealand Concert’s FM network.
Roger Smith, Radio New Zealand Concert’s Manager, says listeners will not only be able to hear this exciting event in
stereo sound on their radios…but they now have the choice of seeing and hearing it as a live video-stream on their
computers.
A live relay of the performance, along with RNZ Concert’s presentation, can also be enjoyed on a giant screen and sound
system in Wellington’s Civic Square.
Mahler’s Eighth Symphony is often described as Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand because of the huge instrumental and choral forces required.
Significant talents been harnessed for this performance are: Soloists with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Voices New
Zealand Chamber Choir, New Zealand Youth Choir, Orpheus Choir of Wellington, Christchurch City Choir, and the Choristers
of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul.
