College students come together to make change
College students from around the lower North Island gathered at Victoria University for a Wellington Youth Climate Forum
this weekend to discuss how they can make a difference to climate change on the New Zealand Schools Day for action on
climate change on October 23.
The students have been singing, writing, drawing and talking about climate change and what they can do about it. They
are working to organise action in their schools as part of the 350 Day of Action on climate change. They have learnt
that 350 is the number of parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that is safe for the climate. They have
discovered that we are already at 389.4ppm and rising.
One student attending the event said that “I’m here to day because this is an exciting and positive opportunity for me
and other young people to make a difference locally and globally about climate change.”
The students have decorated and given away reusable bags to customers at supermarket; learnt the 350 song; made thank
you certificates for people using low carbon emission transport and chalked their message in town.
They also recorded their message as part of a documentary being made about young people involved in positive citizen’s
movements.
The students want to work together with their schools and communities to find ways to reduce carbon emissions and save
the climate.
