12 yr old Courtney heads to Mexico to build homes
Courtney Tilby may only be twelve years old but since hearing about the small groups of New Zealanders who travel to the slums of southern Tijuana in Mexico to build homes she has wanted to help.
‘I decided I wanted to go to Mexico because those kids don’t have much, and I have plenty of stuff. I think that if everybody does one thing to help somebody else, then there wouldn’t be so many sad things happening in the world,’ said Courtney.
This April Courtney and her mother will head to Mexico with Break Free Expeditions to build a home in just three days. Break Free Expeditions partners with Global Tribe and Baja Christian Ministries who select the appropriate recipients based on extensive criteria.
The cost of participating includes the materials needed to build a home and resources for schools and orphanages. Homes are built for families who take in abandoned children with often 10-16 people people living in a makeshift shack.
Courtney is very much the driving force behind this project and is raising the required $8,400 with $1,500 already raised. As Courtney said, ‘If 300 people give $20 to the project at Givealittle.co.nz we can make the lives of abandoned children and the people who care for them in the slums of Tijuana so much better.’
