Summer Camp for Queenstown
The organizers of GAY SKI WEEK NZ will be back for summer with SUMMER CAMP NZ to run from 10 – 18 January 2009.
Highlight events already scheduled include an Opening Pool Party featuring a live DNA Magazine photo shoot. A
combination of adventure days, safaris, golf, mountainbiking and hiking around Queenstown and Wanaka and Glenorchy has
been designed to provide for a broad range of activity.
As with GAY SKI WEEK NZ there will be nightly gatherings for après adventure debriefs and dinners starting with evening
drinks each evening at host hotel Copthorne Queenstown.
Organiser Mike Sanford says QUEENstown with seductive names such as Man Street, Camp Street and Shotover Street, is the
gayest place on earth and that summer in the resort is a great proposition for the gay and lesbian market.
“After 6 gay ski weeks in Queenstown, we’re finding demand for a summer equivalent event. GAY SKI WEEK NZ provides an
organized, but relaxed holiday for people with others who share a similar social profile. People like the format so
much that they’re keen for us to organize something for summer as well.”
Mr Sanford says the gay tourism market is so far unaffected by the current economic conditions and he looks forward to
attracted a good number of people to the event.
“Our feedback is that the gay and lesbian community is delighted to have a holiday that is specially organized for their
sector. They have a high disposable income that remains relatively high in all economic conditions. Recent research has
predicted gay buying power is among the highest of any community sector² and could hit the trillions world wide by
2012³. This is a huge market for Queenstown and New Zealand and a market that appreciates specific targeting through
specifically designed products and services.”
Mr Sanford gauges his market through visitation statistics on his websites, www.gayqueenstown.com and
www.gayskiweeknz.com.
“The feedback through these sites have inspired us to relaunch as a full service gay travel site for Queenstown
including services such as Civil Union delivery.”
And, Wanaka is to get a similar site with www.gaywanaka.com to be launched on October 30.
