Worldwide Knit in Public Day WWKIP
On Saturday the 14th of June 2008, crafters the world over will hit the streets needles and hooks in hand, to celebrate this great annual event. This year’s event takes place in the Dux de Lux in Christchurch, from 11am to 2pm
World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there.
WWKiP Day is really about showing the general public that knitting can be a community activity in a very distinct way. In some places there are many different knitting groups that never interact with each other, on WWKiP Day they come together in one place, making them hard to miss.
Hopefully knitters will make some new friends, meet up with old
acquaintances win prizes for various contests, learn some new tricks
from others and generally have a great time. Enthusiastic people
will go away with contacts to form their own neighbourhood knitting
group.
.
This year's WWKIP Christchurch is being put on by a group of knitting
enthusiasts from the Christchurch Spinners and Weavers' Guild and the
Tuesday night Stitch 'n Bitch group
Events are being held in all over New Zealand see www.wwkipday.com to find group in your area.
