Media Advisory: Phoenix charity match for China quake survivors
Wellington Phoenix FC is playing a charity soccer match this Sunday, 2pm at Newtown Park against Christchurch Chinese United Soccer club to raise funds for the survivors of China’s recent devastating earthquakes.
“This is a great way for everyone to show their support for the victims of China’s earthquakes as well as the chance to watch a good game of soccer,” says Leilei Gao, Phoenix’s Chinese midfielder who joined the team this year
“We’re hoping to see a big crowd at Newton Park this Sunday.”
The death toll from the catastrophic May 12 quake and repeated aftershocks has been put at 65,080. More than 23,000 people have been reported missing, while a total of 360,058 people were injured.
Entry is by gold coin donation and there will be an opportunity to sign books of condolence as well as watching Chinese cultural performances. All funds raised will go to the Chinese Embassy to help towards disaster relief efforts.
Schedule:
1:30pm: Gate open. Public will have a chance to show their condolence to the quake victims at designated mourning area.
1:40pm Tai Qi performance by Senior Chinese Club
1:50pm Opening speeches. Both teams in place
2:00pm kick - off
2:30pm: 10 minute half-time break Country dance by Wellington New Chinese Friendship Association
3:10pm Event conclusion
