A fun, free, family event featuring the Wild Theatre production Fishing for Shadows. This is a unique, interactive
theatre show and puppetry installation with performances at 10am, 1pm and 4pm. We also invite you to come along and take
part in our annual sand sculpture competition. Cash prizes will be awarded to the ones that take the judges fancy.
For more than a decade in the height of summer Waitakere families have taken their buckets and spades to Piha Beach to
take part in the annual Art on the Beach event. The format has varied over the years with themes from eels and urns to
blue trees and lighting and dance spectacles, all set against the majestic backdrop that is Piha. The idea of the
sand-sculpture competition has been a recent addition to compliment the main art attraction. On the day of the event,
the teams stretch along the beach meticulously sculpting their sand piles and working non-stop for up to four hours.
Many of the designs are intricate and complicated and the serious team players bring water-spraying systems. The judging
of the sandcastles is rated on originality of concept, artistic execution of the concept, technical difficulty, carving
technique, and utilization of the site. At the end of the day, everyone goes home with memories of a great day on the
beach filled with fun, sun, sand, and sea.
The event is coordinated by the team at Lopdell House Gallery and is sponsored by the Lion Foundation.
Rumour has it that teams have already begun generating ideas, developing designs, and assigning duties. Entry is free
just turn up on the day to register.
