Underwater Hockey NZ: Underwater Hockey takes Gold
The 2007 Underwater Hockey Trans Tasman Tournament held in Christchurch concluded on Saturday on a positive note for the New Zealand Underwater Hockey teams when 3 of the top New Zealand Teams took gold medals over their Australian rivals.
The New Zealand Women’s faced tough competition from the World number one ranked Australia Women’s team. The determined New Zealand Women’s team with its mix of old and new players won all three games in the series to win the Trans Tasman Trophy. This is the first time the New Zealand Women’s team has done so since 1991.
The World number one ranked New Zealand Men’s team asserted their dominance over the tournament early on and maintained their winning streak also winning the Trans Tasman Trophy.
The New Zealand Under 19 Men’s team won the trophy in their grade, showing the high level of talent of the junior players in the development system.
After the successes at this tournament, the players will now be focusing on the preparation for the 2008 World Underwater Hockey Championships that will be held in Durban, South Africa, with the teams looking to retain or gain the title of World Champions.
