Come and see the rising stars of athletic talent this summer
There will be 1,267 children aged between seven and 14 lining up at the North Island Colgate Games this January 5 to 7
at Newtown Park in Wellington.
An initiative of the New Zealand Children’s Athletics Association, the Colgate Games is an annual event involving some
of New Zealand’s best young athletes.
Some of New Zealand’s best senior athletes have competed at the games in days gone by including a number of All Blacks
and Silver Ferns.
Competitors participate in a variety of disciplines including relays, sprints, shot put, long jump, high jump and
discus.
Individual athletes are able to enter a maximum of four events and clubs can also enter 4 x 100m Relay and Medley Relay
teams.
Colgate Games North Island Chairperson Roger Sowry says the games offer a great way for young athletes to put a foot in
the professional door.
“The games are a fantastic athletic and social event for New Zealand’s up and coming sporting stars and provide a chance
to mix with other athletes from other centres.”
“The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment, and entry is open to any registered athlete.” says Mr Sowry.
The games will see many familiar faces pop in during the week, including celebrity medal presentations.
The games run from 8.30am for three days and every athlete who enters receives a competitor’s ribbon and a tube of
Colgate toothpaste.
