Current Affairs from a Kaumatua Perspective
A new current affairs show from a kaumatua (elder) perspective – TE TEPU – premieres on Maori Television on Tuesday
October 3 at 8.00 PM.
The half-hour programme entirely in the Maori language, TE TEPU – or ‘the table’ – sees prominent kaumatua from
throughout the country joining presenter Waihoroi Shortland (Ngati Hine, Te Aupouri) around the table to share their
views on local, national and international issues.
Maori Television head of news and current affairs, Te Anga Nathan, says the show seeks the kaumatua perspective on
issues which are impacting on Maori and will appeal to native and fluent speakers of reo Maori as well as learners of
the language.
In the first two episodes (Tuesday October 3 at 8.00 PM and Tuesday October 10 at 8.00 PM), three elders – Aubrey Temara
(Ngai Tuhoe), Moe Milne (Ngati Hine) and Anaru Sarich (Ngapuhi) – will join Shortland to discuss a broad cross-section
of subjects from parliamentary to fisheries issues.
“Topics include the Maori MPs in Parliament, the controversy surrounding the Pope and the large number of our people who
have all recently passed on within a short space of time.
“The kaumatua will also focus on the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission as the Tuhoe people question what’s
happening with their shares and quota, the Kahui case as the hunt continues for the killer of the twin boys, and
National’s Don Brash and his infidelity.”
