Bird Flu inspires artist's dead bird art

Exploring the link between the bird flu and hunting and keeping of caged birds led Dunedin artist Angela Singer to
create Second Nature, a sculptural exhibition made from taxidermy birds, animals and waxy "excrement''.
Singer will show some of the works on show at Blue Oyster gallery again later this year as part of the Melbourne
International Arts Festival (in the exhibition, The Idea of the Animal, RMIT Gallery, Melbourne, 12 October - 18
November 2006).
Working predominately with old recycled trophy kill taxidermy, Singer strips back the taxidermy to the inner taxidermic
support, often modeling new “flesh” from wax. All taxidermy used in her art is old, donated and/or discarded as refuse.
Angela Singer has engaged animal subject matter in a sustained manner since the mid 1990s. As with her previous work
Second Nature explores the animal/human divide and the political implications of that divide.
