MEDIA RELEASE 6 July 2005
Invercargill to host NZ Age Group Netball Championships Next Week
32 Regional U19 and U21 teams will gather in Invercargill from Monday 10 - Friday 14 July to represent their regions in the New Zealand Age Group Netball Championships.
Stadium Southland will host 400 players, coaches and officials with 136 games played during the week, with up to five games being played at any one time. 22 Under 19 and ten Under 21 regionally based teams will participate.
Netball New Zealand Game Development Manager Kate Agnew says the competition is an important one on the netball calendar for young players aiming for national selection.
“The NZ Age Group Championships is Netball New Zealand’s largest event each year, and is a great opportunity for players to represent their region and catch the eye of a NZ Selector,” she said.
The competition will be boosted by the involvement of many NZU21 players, who were absent from the competition last year playing in the World Youth Cup in Florida, returning as champions after the tournament. Regional sides also feature players in the NZ Secondary Schools squad and the National Bank Cup Franchise teams.
The competition runs Monday 10 to Friday 14 July, with play beginning from 9:00am. The full draw is available at www.netballnz.co.nz. Results will be available daily online.
