Jazz Rugby - May 13 live rugby, live music, big screen
After its successful performance on February 10 as part of this year's Fringe Festival, Jazz Rugby will be given another
screening at Wellington's Reading Cinemas on the 13th of this month.As the Hurricanes take the field for the last time
before the semi finals, Rob Edgecombe's band will strike up for some improvisation in front of the big screen ahead of
the much anticipated clash with the Waratahs in Sydney.
Jazz Rugby is a show specifically based around live rugby where the musicians, watching the game as it happens along
with everybody else, provide a musical interpretation of what is going on and add a new dimension to the sport which is
loved by so many in this country.
For the opening round in February, where the Hurricanes took on the Blues, they played in front of a capacity crowd at
Reading Cinema number three, and in an exciting match the band seemed to 'spur the team on to a second half fightback to
be eventual winners 37-19.
This time, as the Hurricanes find themselves jostling for positions at the top of the table, the six piece band - which
includes Strike's Tom Pierard and Michael Taylor from the Black Seeds and Cornerstone Roots - will hope to repeat the
performance. Much depends, naturally, on which Hurricanes side shows up on the night, but either way it promises to be
an entertaining night of rugby viewing and music watching.
