Pacific performing artists invited to apply for Creative New Zealand Samoan residency
Pacific performing artists based in New Zealand are invited to apply for a new Creative New Zealand artists’ residency
in Samoa.
The three-month residency, offered by Creative New Zealand’s Pacific Arts Committee, in partnership with the National
University of Samoa, will run between August and November.
The artform focus of the inaugural residency is the performing arts, particularly theatre and dance. The Pacific Arts
Committee will offer the selected resident an artist’s stipend, accommodation and travel costs.
As with the Committee’s Cook Islands Artists’ Residency, the selected artist will work on a clearly defined project. He
or she will also be required to work with the local artist community, conducting two workshops and holding a public
performance or reading towards the end of the residency.
Marilyn Kohlhase, Chair of the Pacific Arts Committee, says that in recent years the Committee has seen a growing demand
from artists wanting to perform, exhibit or undertake research projects in Samoa.
“This residency is a response to that demand and represents a significant development opportunity for artists wanting to
focus on creating new work,” Ms Kohlhase says. “The special relationship between Samoa and New Zealand, underpinned by
the Treaty of Friendship, has been enhanced with the announcement of this annual residency.”
The Samoan residency is one of eleven artist residencies comprising Creative New Zealand’s international residency
programme. These residencies are an important part of Creative New Zealand’s role as an arts development organisation.
