The 500th Cometh…
We’re getting close to a New Zealand chart milestone – the 500th #1 since the Official NZ Music Chart began in May 1975. There’ve been 497 to date as Beep by the Pussycat Dolls holds on for a third week, a long way (in more ways than one) from the first #1, Free And Easy by Australian Helen Reddy back on May 2 1975.
When the magical 500th chart-topper is found, we’ll give you a run down on the #1 Chart Champs.
More LIVE Songs
Ed Kowalczyk (vocals), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass), Chad Taylor (guitar) and Chad Gracey (drums) hail from York Pennsylvania USA. They’ve been together since the mid ‘80s, firstly as First Aid, then Public Affection before finally adopting the name we know today and becoming LIVE in 1990.
The band’s sophomore set Throwing Copper became its first New Zealand charting set, spending two weeks at #1 and selling more than 150,000 copies. It included the big radio hit Lightning Crashes, still a regular staple on playlists and which would have surely been a RadioScope100 #1 had the airplay lists existed in 1994.
1997’s Secret Samadhi also topped our charts for a week, then January last year saw Live’s third #1 Album when Awake: The Best Of Live debuted on top.
This week the band’s first album for new label Epic, and its first set of new material since 2003’s Birds Of Pray, becomes the highest new entry on the Albums Chart as Songs From Black Mountain debuts at #6.
Kaleidoscopic
Using the word kaleidoscope in a debut album title seems a sure way to chart when you’re a Kiwi group. Martin Phillipps-led Dunedin band The Chills’ first charting album was the compile Kaleidoscope World, which peaked at #19 in 1986.
Now new local collective Opensouls place its Kaleidoscope in at #29 this week. The set took five years to create, originally starting as audio in 2001 on group member Ota’s MPC2000. Ota (real name Jeremy Toy) brought together Bjorn Petersen and Tyra Hammond [vocals], Chip [bass], Isaac Aesili [trumpet], Scott Towers [sax], Stephanie Brown [keyboards], Buttafingers [turntables], Julien Dyne [drums] and the process of creating an album began.
Several cuts off the 16-track set have been hits on b.net stations.
Many of the group are experienced musicians and members of other well known local groups such as Solaa, Hollie Smith Band, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Che Fu And The Krates.
Some New Comps
For the past couple of weeks it looked as though the Compilations Chart was stuck in a groove (no new entries last week and absolutely no change in the rankings). Well it’s all over this week with three new entries from all sides of the spectrum.
The highest is new at #3. Broken Dreams II follows last July’s #1 comp Broken Dreams: Rock Anthems with a further collection of modern rock tracks.
It’s hat-trick time for the Memories franchise as Memories Are Made Of This Volume 3 follows the two previous platinum albums, new at #6.
And rounding out the new entries is the latest Ministry Of Sound set, Remix Heaven, new at #9. This sees the likes of Guns N Roses, Roxette and Phil Collins remixed by various of today’s producers.
The New Singles
#21 Kanye West - Touch The Sky
Kanyevel (aka Kanye West) leaps the Grand Canyon in the video to the fourth hit lifted from Late Registration. The recent visitor samples the late Curtis Mayfield’s Move On Up as he takes highest new entry honours this week.
#27 Dem Franchise Boyz - I Think They Like Me
Hailing from Atlanta Georgia, Dem Franchize Boyz are Gerald ‘Buddie’ Tiller, Bernard ‘Jizzal Man’ Leverette, Maurice ‘Parlae’ Gleaton, and Jamall ‘Pimpin’ Willingham. And this week the rappers gain their first New Zealand hit with I Think They Like Me.
#30 Bubba Sparxx feat. Ying Yang Twins - Ms New Booty
About as far away from rap as you can get, Warren Anderson Mathis grew up in the country near the small town of La Grange, Georgia, with no close neighbours. The white boy was turned on to rap by a black friend’s mixtapes from New York and took the name Bubba Sparxxx. This week he teams up with the Ying Yang Twins to put Ms New Booty in at #30 on the Singles Chart.
#40 Ben Harper - Better Way
Straight from his recent #1 album Both Sides Of The Gun comes lead single new at #40. There are rumours of New Zealand tour dates later this year, but nothing official as yet.
The New Albums
#6 LIVE - Songs From Black Mountain

#29 Opensouls - Kaleidoscope

#38 Salmonella Dub - Remixes And Radio Cuts
Salmonella Dub have racked up two #1 debuts previously, with Inside The Dub Plates in 2001 and again in 2003 with One Drop East. Their latest release, Remixes And Radio Cuts, is a CD/DVD set drawing on their recorded output to date. It was originally released in the UK to coincide with their UK and European tour late last year and is new at #38 having just gained a local release via the band’s own Dub Conspiracy label and local distributors Rhythmethod.
