8-thousand at Sealord Night with the Stars
A full moon added an extra touch of magic to Sealord Night with the Stars at Saxton field last night.
A crowd of over 8-thousand responded enthusiastically to the music mix of kiwi icon Dave Dobbyn and the line up of opera
stars at Nelson¹s biggest annual outdoor music event.
Musical Director Peter Rainey said after a first half of opera, mezzo Helen Medlyn paved the way for a change of pace
with a couple of jazzy numbersŠleading into the Dave Dobbyn set.
³The moon came up on cue during Slice of Heaven - it was magic,² he said. ³Dave¹s performance was powerful and emotional
- and was a crowd pleaser for his fans and for the traditional opera audience.²
Tenor Keith Lewis made his New Zealand debut after many years in the UK and rising star soprano Allison Cormack showed
the powerful voice and stage presence that won her the Lexus Songquest and Sealord Aria.
Most memorable from a night of great music would be the popular Lakme duet by Delibes, Dave Dobbyn¹s rendition of
Leonard Cohen¹s Hallelujah and the 1812 Overture with an accompaniment of spectacular fireworks.
Mayor Paul Matheson welcomed the crowd to Sealord Night with the Stars and noted that this year the event was supported
by both the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils.
