Senior citizens invited to free Mayoral Day Concert
Wellington’s senior citizens are invited to attend the second annual Mayoral Day celebration, a free variety concert on
Sunday 22 May, hosted by Mayor Kerry Prendergast.
“Senior citizens can forget the onset of winter for a couple of hours and come and enjoy themselves at a free variety
concert,” says Mayor Prendergast. “The concert will have something for everyone, and family and friends are also
welcome.”
Popular singer, actor and performer Frankie Stevens will act as MC. Frankie’s career spans more than 30 years and his
recent stint as a judge on the NZ Idol television show has introduced him to a new generation of fans.
Also starring is renowned soprano Margaret Medlyn. Margaret has performed in opera, oratorio, recitals and as a concert
soloist with the likes of the NZSO and Opera Australia.
Mayor Kerry Prendergast says Wellington City Council values the contribution that senior citizens have made to the city
and this fun concert is a chance for the Council to give something back to them.
The first Mayoral Day concert last year was well-attended and well received. “I received some lovely letters and calls
from people who’d attended, saying how much they enjoyed the concert and how pleased they were that the Council had put
it on,” says Mayor Prendergast. “I’m anticipating that this year’s concert will be just as marvellous.”
Although the Mayoral Day concert is free, it is ticketed. Tickets are available from Ticketek outside the Michael Fowler
Centre. There are no phone bookings.
Also performing at the Mayoral Day concert will be: Company of Musical Players, Harbour City Rock ‘n’ Roll Club,
Wellington Performing Arts Centre, Rangila (Wellington Indian Association Dancers), Victoria University of Wellington
Big Band, and Lyrica Choir. The concert is directed by Ann Pacey, a well-known jazz singer and actor, who will also be
performing.
The Mayoral Day concert will be at the Michael Fowler Centre, Wakefield Street, on Sunday 22 May, between 2–4.30pm.
There will be an interval. The Michael Fowler Centre has space for eight wheelchairs, so wheelchair users need to book
these early.
There will also be spot prizes and afternoon tea will be provided.
