Solid Gold revealed in Mt Eden
Aucklanders can enjoy some Solid Gold sounds in Mt Eden over the next three months by attending Auckland City’s Music in Parks Solid Gold Saturday series.
Three free performances providing the best in pop, classical, Latin and rock n’ roll music will be held in Maungawhau Mt Eden’s beautiful natural amphitheatre, Tahaki Reserve.
The series starts on Anniversary Weekend (Saturday 29 January) with the golden sounds of the hugely popular Goldenhorse, ably supported by members of the Auckland Philharmonia. Goldenhorse’s first album, Riverhead, was nominated for three Tuis at the 2003 NZ Music Awards, including Best Album and Best Female Vocalist. Also taking the stage is seven piece band ‘Doch’. Their own inimitable blend of rollicking rhythms, subtle dance grooves and Gypsy cadenzas have gained them a considerable following throughout Australia.
There couldn’t be a series of music concerts in Auckland without the Latin sounds of Kantuta who are playing on Saturday 26 February so bring your dancing shoes for a free salsa dance lesson at this mini Salsa Festival, along with your picnic basket. Kantuta are New Zealand’s top Latin dance band achieving both Gold and Platinum records. They perform a unique style of modern Latino music which is inspired by the musical influences of the group’s varied cultural background.
The March finale takes a step back in time to prove that the SIXTIES ROCKZ. New Zealand rock icons Shane and the Saints perform all the hits of the 60's with special guest Scottish entertainer Celine Toner (fresh from her tour as vocalist with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards through Australasia). An energy packed show, it includes songs from Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, Mamas and the Papas, Cliff Richard, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones…and of course Shane’s number one smash hit - “Saint Paul”. The show also features performances from Charlotte Johansen and Maximillionano.
Auckland City Music in Parks has plenty of music and plenty of space to enjoy it in this summer, so grab some food and some friends and head over to Mt Eden to be entertained by some first class music. Check www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/mips for more details or listen to Solid Gold 93.4FM.
These concerts are just some of more than 60 free events provided by Auckland City, in association with Radioworks and supported by The Endeavour Charitable Trust. They are all part of the Ak@Play summer events programme.
