The Metabolists Live at Happy
Wednesday October 6th
Happy
Underground, cnr Tory and Vivian Sts
Wellington
Performers of minimalist songlines and drone-effected improvisation, the Metabolists, formed from some of the country's
most fascinating and talented musicians, are producing music that is unlike anything else in New Zealand.
The group, comprised of saxophonist Jeff Henderson and percussionist Ricki Gooch, have now been joined by
multi-instrumentalist David Long.
Jeff Henderson is a leading figure in New Zealand's improvised music community. Founder of The Space, former Wellington
avant-garde loft venue, and of Happy, Wellington's dedicated creative music venue, Henderson is also the most extreme
saxophonist in the country. He has a performance and recording history that has taken him throughout New Zealand, to
England, Australia, New York, Amsterdam and across Europe and has included work with some of the great luminaries of
contemporary jazz and improvised music.
Ricki Gooch, drummer with the wildly popular roots-rock group TrinityRoots, as well as with underground legends the
Labcoats, is a versatile and uncommonly gifted percussionist. His work with both mainstream and avant-garde groups has
lead to a reputation unparalleled in Wellington. He is a tireless performer, working almost every night of the week,
week in, week out, with some of the country's finest groups.
David Long is another New Zealand music legend. From his beginnings with the Front Lawn, the Six Volts and the
Muttonbirds he has constantly pushed New Zealand music, working as a composer, musicians and producer. Long won Best
Producer of the Year for his work on Fur Patrol's debut album, has composed music for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy as
well as for Blue Smoke and Baxter at the New Zealand Arts Festival, and is an integral member of Plan 9 and the
Labcoats.
