Success For Talented Teens At Manukau Performing Arts Awards
The Manukau Secondary School Performing Arts Awards were held at the Panasonic Performing Art Centre, Botany Downs
Secondary College on Saturday September 4. Judges, Christine Bevan for vocals, and Moss Patterson for Dance, were
impressed with the standard of performances which seem to get better each year
An audience of about 350 watched a programme of dance, vocal and instrumental.

Classical Instrumental:
Winner - Kareena D'Souza (violin) St Cuthberts College
Runner up - Mi Kyung Park (piano) Kelston Girls High School
Classical Vocal:
Winner: Victor Sulfa, Papatoetoe High School
Runner Up: Tama Au Lelei, Tamaki College
Contemporary Individual
Winner: Delani Tuala, Kelston Girls High School
Runner Up: Dino Prescott, Tamaki College
Contemporary Group
Winner: Changes, Kelston Boys High School
Runner Up: The Grooves, Waiuku College
Dance Individual
Winner: Ashley Grey, Manurewa High
Runner Up: Rebecca Boswell, Pakuranga College
Dance Group:
Winner: Ice, James Cook High School
Runner Up: Haka Hula, Tamaki College
Leisa Siteine from Manukau City Council’s Arts’ Community Outreach Services says, “Once again we had a range of entries
of a high standard which made the judging very difficult. It was good to have a range of schools entering with Manukau
well represented. The audience was treated to an afternoon of artistic expression to remind everyone of the pool of
talent right here in the Auckland region. No doubt many of these artists will have their eye on future New Zealand Idol
(or similar) competitions to hone and showcase their talent. I wish them all the best in their endeavours.
“The lucky winners will share in the $4000 prize money. I would like to thank all those who entered, and extend
congratulations to Tamaki College and Kelston Girls High School the overall winning schools, who will share a special
trophy.
“Special thanks must also go to all the tutors who assisted the students in their preparation. We are also extremely
grateful to the Botany Secondary College for the use of their superb new state of the art Panasonic Performing Arts
Centre, which opened in 2003.”
