Reality Television Parody Calls on Fans to Vote G8 Leaders Off of the Island
A reality show is coming to Sea Island, Georgia; the site of this year's meeting of G8 leaders. “Temptation on Sea
Island” calls on fans of reality television to review each global leader’s record on fighting the AIDS epidemic and then
to vote the worst performers off of the island.
The website http://www.AIDSreality.org invites reality television fans to watch as “a cast of eight are tempted to make more empty promises about fighting the
global AIDS pandemic,” and then to judge who they really believe.
According to Jove Oliver, spokesperson for the campaign, “Reality television programs passionately involve millions of
us in voting previously-unknown personalities out of a house or into the jungle. Yet we let the ‘real world’ pass us by
without comment. As world leaders gather at Sea Island, we need to become engaged in addressing one these real issues:
fighting AIDS.”
During past G8 meetings and UN sessions, the leaders of the world’s most industrialized countries created and promised
to fully support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and to commit between $7-10 billion by 2007 to
fight AIDS. Currently, they seem to have fallen way short in providing these funds.
“Watch the G8 show, hear what they say, see what they actually do, and judge for yourself,” said Oliver.
Developed by the Massive Effort Campaign, a network of activists fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, http://www.AIDSreality.org hopes to educate and help involve web surfers and reality television fans in holding world leaders accountable for the
promises they make to fight the global AIDS epidemic.
