Best Of Book Design 2003 Awards
The Book Publishers Association of New Zealand is pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2003 Spectrum Print Book Design Awards. This annual competition is the only event where the publishing industry recognises the work of book designers. Judges look for books with design features appropriate to their audience and showing flair, imagination and innovation. The short list:
Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith: Editors: Maja Bloem and Martin Browne, contributing essays by Murray Bail, Rudi Fuchs, William McCahon, Francis Pound. published by Craig Potton Publishing designed by Jo Williams and Robbie Burton
Dog by CK Stead published by Auckland University Press cover design by Sarah Maxey
Gretchen Albrecht: Illuminations by Ron Brownson published by Godwit designed by Arch McDonnell (Inhouse Design) Harry Hobnail and the Pungapeople by Barry Crump published by Hodder Moa Beckett Publishers Limited designed by Nick Turzynski illustrated by Donovan Bixley
Landforms: The shaping of New Zealand by Les Molloy and Roger Smith published by Craig Potton Publishing designed by Robbie Burton
Spirit in a Strange Land: A Selection of New Zealand Spiritual Verse edited by Harry Ricketts, Paul Morris and Michael Grimshaw published by Godwit designed by Emma Hayes and Arch McDonnell (Inhouse Design)
The Ruth Pretty Cookbook by Ruth Pretty published by Penguin Books (NZ) Ltd designed by Seven photographs by Murray Lloyd
Tikity-boo! Duffy’s fifth Anthology of Children’s Writing and Illustration published by Learning Media designed by Iain Campbell
“This was not an easy job,” said Kay Buisman, one of this year’s two judges. “But the good look very good.”
The judges for 2003 are Hamish Meikle, Senior Lecturer in Design at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Art, and Kay Buisman, Whitcoulls Christchurch Regional Sales Manager and they bring perspectives from both the design and retail sides of the industry.
Winners in the four categories of Best Book, Best Cover, Best Typography and Best Use of Illustration will be announced on Sunday July 20.
