TV Ad Jingle Released Publicly - First For NZ Music
In what is believed to be a first for New Zealand music and following strong public demand, a television jingle has been
recorded as a single for general release.
The song, performed by fictional band "The Zephyrs" in an Air New Zealand television commercial, will be released on May
7 by EMI Capitol Records.
Air New Zealand, which commissioned EMI Capitol Records to record and release the single titled "Something New", sung by
vocalist John Barker and written and produced by Auckland's Liquid Studios, says hundreds of calls were received from
people singing the jingle's praises and wanting to know if they could buy it.
"We were simply blown away by the sheer number of enquiries about the song, an amazing response which caught the
attention of record companies," says Air New Zealand Manager Marketing, Michele Teague. "Air New Zealand is delighted to
take the song to the next level and offer it to the public as a single and through radio airplay."
The song features in the Air New Zealand commercial, produced by Auckland advertising agency Colenso BBDO, about a young
band struggling to sign an overseas' record deal. The band members fly to America and hold a gig on a rooftop in front
of Capitol Records' studio, successfully grabbing the attention of record producers first hand. The theme of the
commercial is "Being There Is Everything".
"Interestingly, many people thought The Zephyrs was a real band with one record company, which shall remain anonymous,
wanting to sign them!" adds Ms Teague.
The "Something New" single will be sold exclusively through Sounds music stores for $5.00 and played on the ZM radio
network. The television commercial, which has recently been off-air, will screen during New Zealand Music Month in May.
