Events Wellington Media Release
19 December 2002
The new Chairman of Events Wellington says that the organisation is taking a leading role in ensuring that Wellington remains as the pre-eminent events, arts and entertainment capital of the country.
The organisation, now entering its second year with a newly elected board and chairman, is set to take a decisive and positive approach to event related issues in the Wellington Region.
Events Wellington represents a growing membership of people and companies who have considerable expertise and talent in the events field. “Our members are the innovators, entrepreneurs and risk-takers in providing quality events. They are important contributors to our vibrant city’s sense of fun, culture and wellbeing. That translates into considerable economic benefit, creates and retains jobs and ensures a rewarding lifestyle level for the whole community.” Mr Sprey said.
“Events Wellington members have and continue to make significant contributions to events all year round. From Round the Bays, Premieres of Lord of the Rings films, Kilbirnie Market Days, the Ice Rinks in Chaffers Park, through to Guy Faulkes fireworks displays and numerous concerts and exhibitions to name but a few, we are 365 day-a-year providers of sport, recreation and entertainment.” said Mr Sprey.
Events Wellington expects to have a voice in developments that affect the city’s ability to produce a continual calendar of broad appeal events, and will be actively promoting the benefits of members’ services to the city and region. The organisation will also act as a point of contact for the industry and be actively involved in attracting and creating new events, whether community based, or larger commercial events.
“We certainly applaud Mayor Prendergast’s enthusiasm in the recently publicised commitments to ensuring that Wellington continues to be the country’s creative capital”, says Mr Sprey. “Our members have the skills, experience and talents to help deliver much of this expectation”.
Events Wellington’s recent AGM elected the new board and chairman. An expectation for the coming year is the development of industry standards to provide a benchmark for member activities and services.
