Icy fragility for Megan Tuffery's winter 2003 collection
Wellington, October 15 (JY Media) Concentrated and distilled, Megan Tuffery's edgy winter 2003 collection is inspired by the mood of the coldest season.
When you step outside in the winter, that instant is an affront to your senses and your moods. It smells different: there is a change in the scent in the air, says Ms Tuffery. It is this scent that the collection suggests, bringing a new meaning to cool fashion for winter.
The designs are ragged but elegant, borrowing from male tailoring. It is her most masculine collection yet but without losing the elegance and intricate detail that have always marked out her designs.
It is a new sensibility that has come from the designer's double residence in Belgium and New Zealand and which has attracted her first retailer in Europe, Harmony of Brussels. Another retailer in Dublin may be added to the mix.
Dewdrops from a spider's web in winter is a delicate lace collar. Her low-cut jumper redefines the idea of a cold snap, potentially revealing if the wearer wishes it. Evoking images of black ice, one of the most elegant dresses to emerge from Megan Tuffery walks a silk thread between austerity and ornamentation.
The garments feature pinstripes and rose prints in fabrics such as velvet, lace and cord. They feature more detailing plus innovative top-stitching.
Ms Tuffery has plans for extending her range into more exclusive realms and promises a surprise in the near future.
The principal colour palette of blue, indigo velvet, black, tan and ice blue is complemented with pink.
Megan Tuffery's new range is available for viewing during L'Oréal New Zealand Fashion Week from the Cintra Apartments, Suite 1702, 3 Whitaker Place, Auckland. The designer may be contacted directly for appointments.
About Megan Tuffery
The Megan Tuffery label was founded in 1997. Her designs are known for their mixture of daring and practicality, for example, unexpected, bold combinations such as polyurethane-coated cotton teamed with satin. A graduate of the Wellington Polytechnic School of Design in Wellington, New Zealand, Ms Tuffery had worked in jewellery and with couturier Martyn Smith before starting her own label. For the last two years, Megan Tuffery has divided her time between Belgium and New Zealand, two less-known but highly charged creative nations. The Megan Tuffery brand is supplied in 15 outlets in New Zealand, seven in Australia and in 2002 appointed Harmony as its first outlet in Brussels, Belgium.
