Student Designer Wins With Glamour
Hollywood glamour and comic book heroes were the wild inspiration for winners of the DuPont Lycra Student Fashion Design
Awards 2002
Supreme Winner - ‘Lolita’, a sensual bodywear set of push-up bra, ‘cheekini’ knickers and slinky bed-jacket took the Supreme Award at
the DuPont Lycraâ Student Fashion Design Awards staged at the Hilton Auckland last night (Monday October 7, 2002).
Massey fashion design student Michelle Hurliman’s movie theme inspiration was interpreted in delicate lace prints on the
briefs and bandeau top.
Supreme Winner: Sexy push-up bra, ‘cheekini’ knickers and slinky black gown won the Supreme Award and the bodywear
category of the DuPont Lycraâ Student Fashion Design Awards for Massey Polytech student Michelle Hurliman.
Judged across four categories, Aquawear, Streetwear, Active Sportswear and Bodywear, Michelle’s Supreme Award was for
her Bodywear entry.

Runner-up to Supreme Winner - Runner up Phillip Patterson of Christchurch Polytechnic brought humour into his design ‘Mmm…’ a clever mismatch of
styles and cuts incorporating nylon Lycraâ mesh and lace. Zara Wylie, Massey Polytechnic, was highly commended for her
bra and body-hugging ‘boy-shorts’ entry sewn from a patchwork of printed fabrics in nylon Lycraâ.
Overall Runner-Up: A clever mismatch of shapes and styles with cheeky appliqué crafted by Christchurch Polytech
student Phillip Patterson, captured the attention of the judges for the bodywear category of the DuPont Lycraâ Student
Fashion Design Awards. It was awarded runner-up in the category.

Aquawear - Hollywood film star glamour featured in the design of the winning garment in the Aquawear category. Otago
Polytechnic’s Amy Dicks-Johnston used black screenprints of early 20th century screen stars to decorate her white nylon
Lycraâ bikini. The strong lines of the bandeau-styled top were reflected in the low, straight cut of the briefs, with a
pert layer of white frills on the bottom.
Aquawear: This beautifully crafted white bikini offers a glimpse of classic Hollywood with the film-star prints
and a mischievous layer of frothy white frills on the bottom. It won it’s designer, Massey Polytech student Amy
Dicks-Johnston a first place in the Aquawear category.
It didn’t take much to guess where the runner-up in the Aquawear category, Massey Polytechnic student Debbie Archer,
gained her inspiration.
Runner-up Aquawear: Massey Polytech student, Debbie Archer’s inspiration for this stunning and beautifully finished
red bikini came from Spiderman and super-hero comics. The top can be worn as a halter-neck or over the shoulder.
‘Spidergirl’ is a cleverly designed red nylon Lycraâ bikini with contrasting black straps. The ‘push-up’ styled bra can
be worn with the double-straps going back up over the shoulder as a halter-neck. The bra cups are decorated with black
stitching in the shape of a round spider’s web. Highly commended in the Aquawear category was Massey Polytechnic’s
Tymone Betts for an outfit that moves from poolside wear during the day to a wrap skirt and halter-neck top for dinner
at night.

Streetwear - Otago’s Amy Dicks-Johnston also won the Streetwear category.
Streetwear: Another classic Hollywood style from Amy Dicks-Johnston of Otago Polytechnic, who also won the aquawear
category. This fitted, fresh white suit features frothy frills across the back of the skirt and on the sleeve. It was
winner of the streetwear section in the DuPont Lycraâ Student Fashion Design Awards.
Following the look she gave her winning bikini, Amy produced a cropped singlet top, a low-sitting mini-skirt and fitted
jacket featuring layers of stiff, frothy frills on the sleeve and back. Award sponsors DuPont are considering entering
Amy’s streetwear design in the ‘Fashions on the Field’ competition at the Melbourne Cup next month.
Runner-up Streetwear: This caramel coloured skirt offers a new spin on the adjustable waistband to help achieve
perfect fit. Christchurch Polytechnic student Jo Laurenson was placed second in the streetwear section of the DuPont
Lycraâ Student Fashion Design Awards for this garment.

Christchurch Polytechnic’s Jo Laurenson, was awarded second place in the Streetwear category with a caramel coloured
A-line skirt that has a cleverly adjustable waistband, teamed to a close-fitting, red top edged with black. Highly
commended in this section were Amberley Green from Otago Polytechnic for her ‘rock’n roll’ inspired skirt and cotton
Lycraâ demin jacket, and Teresa Hodges from the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic for her white dress with contrasting black
laced-up side.

Active Sportswear was an Otago Polytechnic clean sweep. Kayla Snowden designed a baby-pink ice-skating one-piece that’s
playful with a touch of romanticism in a feminine mix of ribbons, frills and ‘shirring’. The judges commented that this
garment “fitted the brief perfectly.”

Runner-up was Karla Sapsford with a functional mountain-bike outfit of princess-line sleeveless top that hugs the curves
of the body, decorated with a stylised bicycle screen-print worn with contoured fit bicycle shorts. Natalie Newlands was
highly commended for her chic dark grey leotard with sheer black over-top and white neoprene wrap skirt.

Award judges Doris de Pont of DNA Clothing, Nigel Eru, designer of the Expozay brand for Bendon Group and High Society’s
Laurinda Sutcliffe found selecting the winners from nearly 100 entries a tough job. The consensus was that this year’s
DuPont Lycraâ Fashion Design Awards winners were outstanding in quality, style and design innovation.
This year’s theme ‘Fashion Surfer’ allowed students the opportunity to draw inspiration from the rebellious world of
pop, clubs, parties, girlie cheerleaders, glamour stars, beauty queens and cartoon heroes. These looks were to be
expressed using fabrics that rely on Lycraâ for their freedom of movement and fit.
The Awards, now in their 22th year, offer design students a valuable opportunity to be noticed by New Zealand’s
burgeoning fashion industry and for the four category winners a cash prize of $1000. Winning a sought after DuPont
Lycraâ Student Fashion Design Award offers the students a platform upon which to display their talents to New Zealand’s
fashion industry early in their career.
