The Last Gasp – A Valentine from the Fringe
Its Valentine’s Day. And it’s the start of the NZ Fringe Festival. And this time its Cupid on the Fringes. Trying to
save romance long after all other pagan gods have been forgotten.
The Last Gasp kicks off the Fringe Festival on Valentine’s Day with a snappy and stylised examination of “True Love”.
For Nick and Allison it was love at first sight – now they can’t stand the sight of each other. They were living happily
until … (but that would be giving away too much).
What we can say is that Cupid will stop at nothing to make this a happy Valentine’s Day. The Last Gasp sees Cupid
duelling his optimism against cynical pessimists is a frenetic sequence of 43 scenes in 50 minutes. Anything goes: no
one is sacred from Christian Cullen to Alfred Lord Tennyson, from singing to gasping. Expect the unexpected.
The Last Gasp stars Rodney Bane, who along with David Austin, formed BATS (Bane Austin Touring Society) Theatre in 1976.
Bane plays Cupid, and along with fellow cast members Simon Boyes, Stephen Walter, Gillian Boyes and Bev Driscoll brings
a wealth of experience to an exciting and challenging play (although Bev and Stephen were not yet born when BATS was
founded!).
The Last Gasp is on at No 5 Cable St from Valentine’s Day (14th Feb) to 18th Feb at 6:30pm. Tickets are $12 - $15
