EXHIBITIONS
In addition to Te Papa's permanent exhibitions that tell the stories of our land and people, we have a programme of
short-term exhibitions from both overseas and New Zealand.
Gianni Versace: The Reinvention of Material (Until 15 July 2001) This stunning exhibition highlights the breathtaking
creativity of one of the world's most influential and celebrated designers - Gianni Versace. Curated by the late Richard
Martin of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Chiara Buss of the Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Como, this
exhibition features over 150 of his greatest works, including clothing, fabrics, original sketches, and
photographs.Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience the famous dresses that adorned the stars and learn more
about Versace the artist: the incredibly skilled technician whose vast knowledge of fabric and form turned the fashion

Inheriting the Netherlands (Until 14 October) This exhibition looks at works of Dutch born artists who have immigrated
to New Zealand or New Zealand born artists of Dutch descent. Comprising of works on canvas, photographs, and 3D
installations, Inheriting the Netherlands questions the artists' sense of belonging to either country and their ongoing
struggle for identity. The Ericsson Zone, Level 3 Free entry.
Partners in Time: Art and the Treaty (Until late June) An artistic exploration of the continuing dialogue between Mäori
and Päkehä. Partners in Time presents works from Te Papa's collection, including works by Max Hailstone and a selection
from the Muka portfolio. The Illot Centre, Level 4. Free entry.
Quake Braker Venture underground to see Te Papa's newest permanent exhibition Quake Braker. This is your chance to see
some of the 152 base isolators Te Papa sits on, and to learn how these New Zealand inventions make Te Papa a safer
place, should an earthquake strike. Outside by the Main Entrance. Free entry. Proudly sponsored by EQC and IGNS
Nieuw-Zeeland - Going Dutch (Until January 2002) Te Papa's second Community Gallery exhibition focuses on the Dutch
Community in New Zealand, and tells the moving stories of some of the approximately 100,000 New Zealanders of Dutch
descent. Nieuw- Zeeland - Going Dutch shows a vibrant community that has greatly enriched our culture. The Community

Te Aupouri (Until October 2001) Te Aupouri, an iwi from the far north of Aotearoa, tell their gutsy and compelling story
of survival. This exhibition includes fascinating history, exciting contemporary art, and beautiful carving. Level 4.

EVENTS:
Each month Te Papa has a wide ranging programme of events demonstrating the depth and diversity of our country. Below
are some of the key highlights for this month.
MATARIKI @ TE PAPA, 25 MAY - 24 JUNE The appearance of Matariki (Pleiades) in our Southern Skies, and the first new moon
that follows, heralds the beginning of the Mäori New Year. Te Papa is celebrating Matariki with a fabulous range of
events that showcase contemporary and traditional Mäori art forms. See below for details of our Matariki events marked
with the following symbol -
VERSACE FLOORTALKS Every Saturday, 11am, 1pm, 3pm Versace Floortalks. Join a Te Papa expert for a look at some of the
garments within the Gianni Versace: the reinvention of material exhibition. Exhibition admission charge applies. Please
register your name at the Versace ticket desk, The Tower Gallery, Level 4. Numbers are limited.
DEMONSTRATIONS OF SEWING EXPERTISE INSIDE THE VERSACE EXHIBITION Every Saturday and Sunday, 11am - 2pm These
demonstrations will be given by senior design students, and will show you the intricate steps of garment creation and
finishing details. Exhibition admission charge applies.
- TONI HUATA Saturday 9 June, 12noon - 1pm A spellbinding fusion of jazz, jungle, dub, dance, classical, fashion, poi,
and tradition. For those of you that missed the stunning album launch in October 2000, this performance is a must! Te
Marae, Level 4.
VERSACE CLASSIC FASHION SHOW Saturday 9 June, 1pm - 1.45pm The catwalks of Milan have come to Te Papa! In conjunction
with the Versace Classic Boutique in Auckland, Te Papa is pleased to present Versace Classic's new 2001/2002
Spring/Summer Collection. Don't miss this exciting event - striking models, gorgeous clothes, and all the glitz and

- APIRANA TAYLOR Saturday 9 June, 2.30pm - 3.30pm Join renowned Mäori actor and writer Apirana Taylor as he celebrates
Matariki with fascinating Mäori tales that are full of action, excitement, humour, and suspense. Te Marae, Level 4.
- TIHEI Sunday 10 June, 12noon - 1pm Be thrilled by Mere Boynton (vocalist), Chaitanya Temepara (classical guitarist),
and Craig Newsome (pianist), as they give an exhilarating performance of traditional and contemporary Mäori waiata with
a dash of Spanish music to spice things up. Ole! Te Marae, Level 4. - RONALD KARAITIANA WITH STUDENTS OF HATO PAORA
COLLEGE Sunday 10 June, 1pm - 2pm Ronald Karaitiana with students of Hato Paora College perform a waiata that combines
the traditional with the contemporary. The Wellington Foyer, Level 2.
- BRANNIGAN KAA Sunday 10 June, 2pm - 3pm Regarded as the 'local soul-man', singer/songwriter Brannigan Kaa performs a
mix of funky original indigenous music from his upcoming new album Taputapu.
- MATARIKI LECTURE: HOHEPA KEREOPA Thursday 14 June, 6.30pm - 7.30pm Tohunga Rongoa Hohepa Kereopa talks about what the
appearance of Matariki means to Mäori in terms of crop planting and the seasonal gathering of flora and fauna. Te Marae,
Level 4.
ROBERT BRESSON FILM RETROSPECTIVE Friday 15 - Sunday 24 June, Soundings Theatre Te Papa presents a season of thirteen
films by the French director Robert Bresson (1907 - 1999). Bresson's entrancing and beautiful films reflect the harsh
reality of 20th century Europe as well as his own artistic and spiritual concerns. This will be the first time that all
the films have been shown together in New Zealand, and a unique opportunity for film-goers to appreciate the work of one

FREE BEHIND-THE-SCENES-TOURS Saturday 16 June, 11am, 1pm, 3pm Join Moana Parata, Te Papa's Collection Manager Mäori, for
a look at Te Papa's Mäori Collection. Please register your name at the Information Desk, Level 2. Numbers are limited
and restricted to participants 12 years and over.
- KAHURANGI Saturday 16 June, 12 noon - 1pm The Kahurangi New Zealand Mäori Dance Theatre from Hawke's Bay was formed to
provide cultural, recreational, and educational activities for a wide audience, and offer employment with a strong
cultural base for Mäori youth. Their performance is powerful and delightfully different. Te Marae, Level 4.
- THE TRAVELLING TUATARAS Saturday 16 June, 1.30pm - 2.15pm Kids, don't miss The Travelling Tuataras with their
performance of stories and songs from Aotearoa New Zealand, colourful props and puppets, and lots of audience
participation. Te Marae, Level 4.
- HAUMANU Saturday 16 June, 2.30pm - 3.30pm A journey through the world of the traditional Mäori music. Hear the voices
of bone, stone, wood and shell, as Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns tell the stories of these unique instruments. Te

- THE TRAVELLING TUATARAS WORKSHOP Sunday 17 June, 12 noon - 1.30pm A creative adventure for kids working with The
Travelling Tuataras through Artz! Hands-on fun, creating unique expressions for the celebration of Matariki. Te Marae,

- TE RANGI 2 MAI Sunday 17 June, 1.30pm - 2pm Enjoy the sounds of Te Rangi 2 Mai as they perform waiata for all ages.

- UIA NGA WHETU - TAIOHI AND RANGATAHI DEBATES Thursday 21 June, 3.30pm and 5pm These debates traverse controversial
issues surrounding the relevance of traditional Mäori concepts and perceptions of Mäori. Te Marae, Level 4.
- CARVING DEMONSTRATION BY KÖNAE ARÖNUI WÄNANGA Saturday 23 June, 11am - 4pm Experienced carvers demonstrate traditional
Mäori whakairo, including weaponry and a poupou (an ancestral figure). Te Marae, Level 4.
- WEAVING DEMONSTRATION BY KÖNAE ARÖNUI WÄNANGA Saturday 23 June, 11am - 4pm Experienced weavers demonstrate the
traditional Mäori techniques of Raranga, Whatu, and Taniko. Te Marae, Level 4.
