BREW NZ APPOINTS DIRECTOR
Food and beer expert Kerry Tyack has been appointed director of a new event celebrating beer in Wellington next year. Brew NZ, Celebrating Great Beers, is a three-day public event to be held during May 2002. It will showcase beer in all its diversity, celebrate food and beer and bring together the nation's brewers and their products with beers from overseas in the capital's bars, cafes, restaurants, shops and supermarkets. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010518brewnz.htm
CIRCLE BREWERIES TAKES OVER ONEHUNGA SPRINGS BRANDS
On 1 May Circle Breweries took over the brands of Allen’s Brewery (ex Onehunga Springs). Circle Breweries started brewing and distributing the Onehunga Springs range of Old Thumper Lager, Draught and Dark along with the Springs Natural Lager, Draught and Red Beer. Brewer Ian Ramsey has moved to Circle and continues to brew the Onehunga Spring beers as well as the Circle range of beers. The Onehunga Spring brewing plant has been packed up and moved to Napier.
MAC'S REVEALS NEW LOOK
After twenty years of wearing a full wrap, Mac's is stripping off the plastic and sporting a more natural, paper look. The contemporary, new collection says heritage, but throws in a modern twist. The stunning new look mixes striking colours and bold typefaces with a back-baring label, replacing the modest designs of the past. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010524macs.htm
MOUNTAIN GOAT LAUNCH NEW STOUT
Well, the Surefoot Stout is finally here and before we distribute it to pubs, the Goat Army will get the first shot at it this Fri June 1 at our brewery open night. 6pm kick off, free keg at 7pm, Cadet DJ Andy on the discs, Rocket Rod on the bbq. See you here! (address 56 Crown St, Richmond,Vic 3121, tel 03 9428-1180).Ohh, winners of the stout naming comp can collect their case from Friday eve too.
INCREASED LIQUOR TAX A RECIPE FOR MISERY
Imposing higher taxes on beer and wine will only increase the suffering of the small minority who abuse alcohol. The Beer Wine and Spirits Council said today that the strategy to increase alcohol taxes, as covered in the media over the weekend, will not reduce alcohol abuse and will simply further disadvantage problem drinkers. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010521bwsc.htm
NEW MONTEITH'S BREWERY STRUCTURE DETERMINED
The key outcomes of the consultation are: 1. Production: The production of tap and packaged Monteith's beer will be shared between Monteith's Brewing Company and Waitemata Brewery. The future production split will be determined by ongoing market demand; brand growth; export opportunities and production scheduling however both breweries will produce all five main Monteith's beer styles. 2. Staff: Ten out of 15 full-time staff will be retained. Five staff have been offered jobs at Waitemata Brewery or a comprehensive outplacement package including redundancy compensation, personal, financial and career counselling. http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010516monteiths.htm
DB WINS BACK DOMAIN NAME
DB Breweries has won a court battle giving it ownership of the website address www.db.co.nz. A New Zealander now based in Britain registered the domain name "DB" in 1996, then tried to sell it to DB Breweries for $25,000, the company said in a statement today. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,800888a28,FF.html
DB LASHES OUT OVER 'PR CAMPAIGN'
Besieged DB Breweries has lashed out at West Coast Monteith's advocate Gerry Morris with threats of legal action and accusations that he is covertly working for rival brewery Lion Nathan. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,772832a1934,FF.html
NEW COCK & BULL NOW OPEN
Cock & Bull Botany Town Centre is definitely worth a visit. Probably the most impressive English themed pub in the country. Beer sales have been huge since opening and even with the installation of their new 6600 litre fermenter there is talk now of the need for more fermentation capacity as they can’t keep up with demand.
LIMBURG ALTBIER
Limburg Brewing Company has released the first of a new range of tap beers – Limburg Altbier. It is available on the guest tap at Galbraith’s Alehouse. A very good example of the style. Chris O’Leary presented his range of beers and a handful of other extreme beers, last Tuesday at the beer tasting at The Beer Cellar. On the night Limburg Pale Ale – Hopsmacker was vote favorite, with its big passionfruit and citrus notes from the large amount of Saaz hops used. Limburg Altbier (to be named by those that try it at Galbraith’s Alehouse over the next month) was voted second best.
New beers: St Arnou, new seasonal beer Hubbards Harvest Ale. Emerson’s, Organic Oatmeal Stout
Coming Soon Lion Pils, to be released in the next few weeks Roggen Sunrise, new Brewmasters Selection
MY BEER IS BREWED WHERE?
I must say I was absolutely dumbfounded when I received news of DB's intentions to close Monteith's. Over the last five years the Greymouth brewery has gone from being a run down outpost of the DB empire offering just one local beer, to producing the company's most successful range. Ironically, for a time the West Coast's most famous brewery looked like becoming a victim of its own success with increasing demand outstripping its limited production capability. No doubt the powers that be at DB saw economic sense in switching production from Greymouth to their under-utilised Waitemata Brewery in Auckland but they clearly weren't banking on the determined reaction of Monteith's drinkers. http://www.realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/griggs-g/200105wherebrewed.html
