Common Factor & Ebb - Easter Weekend
Good Friday the 13th April 2001 at Galatos. AK
Saturday April 14th 2001 at Subnine. WGTN
Open your mind and experience a live audio demonstration from a dynamic unit, styled and luscious in their motel unit, playing real live dancing people a selection of dirty house, disco and funk, with extra freedom. No other dance event in New Zealand has seen such great casting. Starting the evening are the lush and layered sounds of Wellington trio Ebb, whose varied amorphous moods and laid back performance style start the night right.
Ebb are a sublime mix of underground disco, funk and dub; like the Mad Professor meeting George Clinton and Donna Summer in a cheap motel for some acapella thrills. Ebb is voiced by the sultry Lisa Tomlins while Ruben and Iain provide phenomenal soundscapes, dub outs, effects and add super skanky samples. Ebb perform their magic while emerged in a plush hotel setting. They could be waiting for their man, warming up for a bit of reefer madness, but instead they engage in soul filled stories that capture the dancefloor.
"Ebb are bringing us a new era of dance music. That’s made by humans, for humans. They¹re making it as you’re dancing, which feels light years ahead of the soul-less blips of some nerd’s computer." Cleve Cameron; Spungo. London.
Born in Japan, Nick Calingaert aka Common Factor spent his youth living in several countries such as Italy, England and Belgium before finally settling in Chicago in 1996. This will be the second time that this well travelled DJ and producer has played in New Zealand, after performing live at the Wellington International Jazz Festival in October of last year.
His most recent releases have been on Carl Craig¹s Planet E label and the Paper Recordings imprint and co-producers include Gemini (Spencer Kincy) and Chris Nazuka. His music is definitely hands in the air type stuff, yet with the realness of Chicago house and Detroit techno. With his solid blend of old and new school, American and European styles, Nick flows on the funk with lush melodic grooves, smart and sexy. Nick is currently based in the home of house music, Chicago, and has set up his own label Tactile, with plans to release Ebb’s first single Be The Man after their joint New Zealand tour, the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
"Somewhere between the unmistakable sounds of both Chicago House and Detroit Techno influenced by classic Œ70s disco and NY-style vocal garage house tracks, the result is two fierce tracks that send dancefloors off the hook." forcedexposure .com
Wow! As an extra thrill for this decadent dancing weekend, Wellington audiences also get for FREE The Vinyl Junkies first birthday party featuring Phillipa; Luke da Spook and John "jackin" Saunders for a cool selection of local house DJ playing their favourites. Dance cheek to cheek with your honey to Ebb, then get on the floor and get funked up by Common Factor in an amazing and groundbreaking double bill this coming Easter weekend.
Tickets are on sale now from Marbecks & BPM in AK, Flipside, Chelsea Records and Jive Junkies in WGTN. Listen in to bFM and Radio Active for interviews and giveaways.
