Dwelling consents at seven-year high – Media release
9 January 2015
Building consents for new dwellings hit a seven-year high in November, Statistics New Zealand said today.
In unadjusted terms, 2,420 new dwellings were consented in November (including 474 apartments).
“November is typically a strong month for new dwelling consents. The number this month was the highest since August
2007,” business indicators manager Clara Eatherley said. “Auckland and Canterbury regions contributed the most to this
high number.”
Together, Auckland and Canterbury regions consented 70 percent of the national total for new dwellings:
• Auckland – 967 (including 442 apartments)
• Canterbury – 726 (including 32 apartments).
In November 2014, the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented increased 10 percent. Excluding apartments,
this number was up 2.1 percent.
The trend for the number of new dwellings, including apartments, has shown little change in recent months after
generally increasing since the historic low in March 2011.
In November, $1.3 billion of building work was consented – $867 million of residential work and $426 million of
non-residential work.
Data for building consents is obtained from all territorial authorities.
