Ministry of Health seeks world-class contractor for one of New Zealand’s largest-ever hospital projects
A world-leading construction company is being sought as the main contractor for Christchurch Hospital’s new Acute Services Building (ASB).
The Ministry of Health is seeking Registrations of Interest (ROI) from local and international companies with a proven track record in delivering complex health projects.
“We’re searching for a talented forward-thinking company to bring this exciting project to life,” Murray Cleverley, the Hospitals Redevelopment Partnership Group spokesperson, said. “We’re also looking to companies for well-researched construction techniques that could shorten the project’s timeline and reduce costs,” he said.
At a cost of about $450 million, the 62,000 square metre ASB will be one of the largest health-related building projects in New Zealand's history. It is also one of the anchor projects in Canterbury’s recovery from the region’s devastating 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Completion of the building will allow the Canterbury District Health Board to meet the demands of its growing and increasingly ageing population.
Designed by a team of local and international consultants, in collaboration with hospital staff and healthcare consumers, the ASB will include new operating theatres; approximately 400 new beds; purpose-designed children’s facilities; an expanded intensive care unit; a state-of-the-art radiology department; a new emergency department; a helipad; and more car parking.
Because of its importance to Canterbury people, the ASB will be constructed to the highest seismic standards. Base isolators are among the specialist engineering features that will allow it to move in an earthquake without significant damage.
Preparation of the ASB site, at the rear of Christchurch Women’s Hospital, will begin in September with construction planned to start in July 2015. The new building is expected to be operational by mid 2018.
