Retail card spending flat in June

Retail spending using electronic cards was flat in June 2014, Statistics New Zealand said today.
When adjusted for seasonal effects, retail spending was unchanged this month, following a 1.2 percent increase in May
2014.
"Spending rose in three retail industries and fell in three during June," business indicators manager Neil Kelly said.
"Fuel and hospitality had the largest rises, while durables had the largest fall."
The three largest retail movements in June 2014 were:
• fuel, up $12 million (1.6 percent)
• hospitality, up $3.7 million (0.5 percent)
• durables, down $7.8 million (0.7 percent).
Core retail spending (which excludes the vehicle-related industries) fell 0.4 percent in June 2014.
Including the two non-retail industries (services and non-retail), the total value of electronic card spending rose 0.5
percent.
Trends for the total, retail, and core retail series have all generally been rising since these series began in October
2002.
In unadjusted terms, 112 million transactions were made across all industries in June, with an average value of $51. The
total amount spent across all transactions was $5.7 billion.
