HEADLINE: 65,000 Savvy Kiwi’s Avoid Christmas Debt [Hampsta]
Rising debt levels appear to be having a dramatic effect on New Zealanders spending and saving behaviour with a growing
number of Kiwi’s signing up to the Christmas savings plan hampsta.
Hampsta has seen a dramatic rise in the number of customers in the last two months and are currently experiencing growth
at a rate of 200%.
“At our current growth rate, there will be over 65,000 New Zealanders who are going to be able to feel the benefits of a
less stressful Christmas knowing that they have a bit aside for Christmas presents as well as the Christmas drinks and
all the food that goes along with celebrating this time of year” says Gary Alway General Manager of hampsta.
Hampsta was established late last year by Kiwi’s for Kiwi’s in response to the changing economy and as a more modern way
of helping people prepare for Christmas.
Previously families who wanted to plan ahead for their Christmas were largely left at the mercy of expensive hamper
companies. Hampsta operates an entirely different system, using everyday technologies people use to shop these days.
Once customers sign up with hampsta and start putting money aside, they are issued with an ‘eftpos style card’ that they
can use to purchase goods of their choice at over 300 partner stores nation-wide.
“We have seen a steady growth in the number of people saving for their own Christmas, and for the extended shopping
period, through to 10 January. People are now getting hampsta cards as gifts for their loved ones, sharing the choice
and value of hampsta with their friends and family.” Says Mr Alway.
With Kiwi’s struggling to pay their rising debts, hampsta is providing a way of planning ahead and still getting to
