Rilean Construction all go at Kawarau Falls Station
A leading Queenstown construction company was recently awarded the contract to build 3 more buildings in Kawarau Falls
Station, one of New Zealand’s biggest commercial developments.
Rilean Construction was appointed the main contractor for Reserve, Central and South in October; three residential
buildings providing a range of high quality townhouses, duplex units and apartments for developer Melview Developments.
The three buildings are part of the first stage of the development which includes the five-star Westin Hotel which is
well underway and on-track for completion next Summer, for which Rilean Construction is also a sub-contractor.
Rilean Project Manager Trevor Meikle said he was delighted to be working on one of the country’s most exciting
developments.
“This is a dream project to be involved in with some great challenges to keep us on our toes,” he said.
Mr Meikle said they were required to build on solid rock on the side of a hill facing Lake Wakatipu, with a road
intersecting all three buildings.
“Organisation is absolutely vital in a project of this complexity, so we have weekly meetings with other workers on site
to discuss the co-ordination of traffic on the road, right down to the timings of each road user.
“We’ve worked on some of the trickiest projects in Queenstown over the past few years, so I would say we’re ideally
suited to carry out the project.”
Work started in October and completion date is set for the end of November next year. Approximately 10 people are
involved in the Rilean project which is expected to increase to more than 50 staff and subcontractors next year.
Rilean Construction, established 22 years ago, recently won the Tourism and Leisure Project Gold Award and the
Commercial Project of the Year Award for its work on a $13m renovation of the Novotel Queenstown Lakeside hotel. The
awards were for the Southern Region of the Master Builders Association.
