Clever new diesel power from Hyundai
Hyundai continues to push the diesel technology envelope, building more power and torque into eco-sensitive engines.
The fast-rising South Korean brand has now unleashed a 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel powerplant, in its new Veracruz SUV for
the northern hemisphere market, pumping out 177kW and 451 Nm of torque yet achieving 11km per litre of fuel.
“The challenges before us include ever-more stringent worldwide emission regulations, plus customers expecting more
performance from the diesel engine but less noise, vibration and harshness comparable with a petrol engine,” explained
the Managing Director of Hyundai Automotive NZ, Philip Eustace.
“The V6 in this new model achieves massive torque and big power, driving through a six-speed auto transmission, right
across a broad speed range between 1750 and 3500 rpm.
“This is really clever technology. The compression ratio is 17.3 to one and the bank angle of the V is 60 degrees, with
a bore and stroke of 84 by 89 mm. The turbocharger is electrically-driven.
“We’re seeing this new latest design philosophy flow right through the diesel range and almost every model we bring to
New Zealand is available in both diesel and petrol versions.
“Although this engine will not make it to New Zealand in the North American Veracruz model, it highlights the
advancements Hyundai are making with diesel technology that they invested in several years ago.
“With the Government now talking about ways to make the road user charge fairer, as we and others have been urging,
things have never looked better for diesel in this country and for Hyundai.”
