International and Domestic Guest Nights Rise
International visitors spent 1.1 million guest nights in short-term commercial accommodation in October 2006, up 5 percent from October 2005, Statistics New Zealand said today. Australian visitors (up 54,000) recorded the largest increase in international guest nights.
Domestic guest nights accounted for 1.4 million guest nights in October 2006, a 4 percent increase compared with October 2005.
Total guest nights in October 2006 were 5 percent higher than in October 2005. In October 2006, guest nights were 6 percent higher in the North Island and 3 percent higher in the
South Island, compared with October 2005. Nine of the 12 regions recorded more guest nights, with Auckland and Wellington recording the largest increases. All five accommodation types showed more guest nights in October 2006 than in October 2005, with hotels showing the largest increase.
