Big Year for Vada Hair
2006 has been a busy year for Vada Hair Salon, Pitt Street, Auckland. It has been acknowledged as a finalist and winner
of several prestigious awards; two new collections have been released – GILDA and BIBA; and the salon is currently
undergoing a major transformation.

Guy Roberts Collection – GILDA
Guy (a director of Vada) takes his inspiration from the FILM NOIR genre with its brooding Femme Fatales - tough-sweet
attitude; gorgeous and predatory, mysterious and sexy. Think films such as The Big Sleep and Gilda (Rita Hayworth) of
the mid 1940’s. Guy extended this feeling with the shoot by using expressionistic lighting & deep focused camera work, reminiscent of the film noir.
Salon Collection – BIBA
The team’s inspiration for this collection came from London’s 60s street style, in particular the famous BIBA label of
the late 60s, early 70s with its eclectic ‘no rules’ fashion culture. Hair takes on a soft unstructured outline.
Salon Refurbishment
Vada is currently undergoing a major salon refurbishment by the award-winning architect Michael Fisher.
The challenge for the refurbishment has been to accommodate the growing business within the confines of the existing
space. Each styling station has been designed as its own small world, providing for the stylist’s individual equipment
needs but hidden away from the public arena so as to present a calm look within the busy salon.
A simple palette of materials, timber, concrete and mirror has been employed to harmonize with the existing space and
create an environment that will stand the test of time in the fashion-conscious world. Careful placement of up and down
lighting has been made to both optimize the individual work area and allow the transition from day to night usage
without creating stark brightness for the client.
The wash area has been designed as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the main salon. A large hanging screen to the
street windows both obscures life outside and suggests a more tranquil place filled with gently swaying trees.
The planned reception area will present a unique environment with an eclectic mix of materials. A metal mesh curtain
adds drama in juxtaposition with soothing lighting. A smoky mirrored wall between the salon and reception creates an
Alice in Wonderland sensation as clients move through the doors to be transformed by Vada stylists.
The salon is due to be completed at the beginning of 2007.
