TravelScoop, currently in BETA release, is a New Zealand community driven travel and tourism information news site where contributors submit stories and articles to the site for review. However, rather than allowing an editor to decide which stories are worthy of frontpage attention, the users do.
Visitors to the web site can hit the front page for the top travel news, price deals, stories, information as determined by the travel community itself. It costs nothing to contribute articles or use the web site.
Travelscoop contributors MUST register in order to participate in submitting articles/news leads, and to rate/vote on submited pages. Registration is effortless and does not involve any email verification or other complicated nonsense. Registration takes less than on minute.
Once an artice is submitted by a user it is instantly posted in the TravelScoop news queue. This is a temporary holding place where stories wait to be promoted to the homepage. To help promote stories to the homepage, simply visit the "View Pending Scoops" area and vote for stories you think are worth another look by others.
When a story has received enough votes, it is automatically promoted to a "published article". Should the story not receive enough votes (or is reported) it eventually falls out of the queue.
The TravelScoop concept works because a large group of people actively promote good stories to the homepage. Since TravelScoop's content is user-driven, it is up to YOU to contribute.
Submitting articles is easy. Simply click on "Submit a New Story" and enter the URL of the story you would like to submit. Then fill out a title, description, and category for the story. Should you encounter a potential duplicate, please vote for the original story and do not submit a duplicate entry.
TravelScoop is the ideal medium for New Zealand travel and tourism operators, both big and small, to get their message out with minimum effort and NO COST.
Every time you submit, vote, or comment on a story it is bookmarked and stored within your user profile. To visit your user profile, click your username "Profile" on the top navigation and you will be brought to your personal profile. You will then have the options of viewing "sent news", "Published news", and "Unpublished news".
TravelScoop is based upon opensource software originally named menéame in Spanish, a web application that allows you to submit an article that will be reviewed by all and will be promoted, based on popularity, to the main page. When a user submits a news article it will be placed in the "TravelScoop Queue" area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page.
The original source code for TravelScoop was authored by Ricardo Galli. He was influenced by the extremely popular English technology site digg.com.
